無許可離隊のこと。
　アメリカとイギリスでは略語は「A.W.O.L.」で共通です。正式な名称は、アメリカが「absent without offical leave」、イギリスは「absent without leave」です。ただし、米軍の法律用語では「absence without offical leave」と、最初の単語が違うので、注意が必要です。
　カナダとオーストラリアでは、略語は「A.W.L.」で、正式な名称は「absent without leave」です。

　南北戦争時代からあった言葉ですが、一般的になったのは第１次世界大戦中です。「A.W.O.L（エイ・ダブリュー・オー・エル）」ではなく、「a-wall（エイ・ウォール）」と発音するのが一般的です。

　国内メディアは「脱走（desertion）」と「無許可離隊」の区別がついておらず、特に米軍に関する報道で、しばしば混乱がみられます。

　米軍の脱走罪は、正式な許可なく部隊を離れ、二度と軍に戻らない意志を持つ者に対して適用されます。無許可離隊は、正式な許可なく部隊を離れたが、軍に戻る意志がある者に対して適用されます。両者の違いは軍に復帰する意志の有無だけです。このため、所在不明の兵士に対しては、まず無許可離隊が適用され、捜査の中で、軍に戻らないという意思が確認された場合、脱走罪が適用されます。当然、脱走罪の方が重罪で、最高刑は死刑です。

　米軍は通常、所在不明になって１ヶ月経つと、容疑者を無許可離隊で起訴します。このため、１ヶ月部隊に戻らないと脱走罪になると誤解している人がいますが、これは正しくありません。たとえば、１ヶ月以上、許可なしに部隊を離れても、復帰する意志がある者には無許可離隊が適用されます。米軍の統一軍規法典は、離隊期間で罪種を分けていませんが、手続き上、１ヶ月の期間を持つことになっているのです。これは、おそらく、訴因を変更するのは好ましくないので、１ヶ月の期間を置いて、容疑者が軍に復帰する意志があるかどうかを確認しようとしているのでしょう。

米軍の統一軍規法典に見る「脱走罪」と「無許可離隊罪」

§ 885. Art. 85. Desertion
(a) Any member of the armed forces who―
(1) without authority goes or remains absent from his unit, organization, or place of duty with intent to remain away therefrom permanently;
(2) quits his unit, organization, or place of duty with intent to avoid hazardous duty or to shirk important service; or
(3) without being regularly separated from one of the armed forces enlists or accepts an appointment in the same or another one of the armed forces without fully disclosing the fact that he has not been regularly separated, or enters any foreign armed service except when authorized by the United States; is guilty of desertion.
(b) Any commissioned officer of the armed forces who, after tender of his resignation and before notice of its acceptance, quits his post or proper duties without leave and with intent to remain away therefrom permanently is guilty of desertion.
(c) Any person found guilty of desertion or attempt to desert shall be punished, if the offense is committed in time of war, by death or such other punishment as a court-martial may direct, but if the desertion or attempt to desert occurs at any other time, by such punishment, other than death, as a court-martial may direct.

§ 886. Art. 86. Absence without leave
Any member of the armed forces who, without authority―
(1) fails to go to his appointed place of duty at the time prescribed;
(2) goes from that place; or
(3) absents himself or remains absent from his unit, organization, or place of duty at which he is required to be at the time prescribed; shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.
